About LEE Ka-sing and his gallery
Lee Ka-sing moved to Toronto in 1997 and set up his gallery in 2000 on Queen Street West, in a loft building situated in an area known as the "wild wild west" at the time. Over the years the street has gone through some great transformations, flourishing with shops, galleries, cafes, boutiques and restaurants.
Originally named OP fotogallery, LEE Ka-sing gallery is in fact an extension of Lee's gallery in Hong Kong. The gallery focused on Asian artists, especially photo-based work. His representation of high caliber artists like Nobuyoshi Araki, Yao Jui-chung and Xing Danwen stems from his own background as a high-profile artist, and the recognition of his involvement and achievements of promoting Hong Kong contemporary photography in the 1990s.
During that time, Lee, together with Holly Lee and Lau Ching-ping, founded "DISLOCATION", a significant monthly photo publication that stimulated and contributed to the growth of Hong Kong's contemporary photography scene. "DISLOCATION" also influenced the first phrase of development of contemporary photography in mainland China and had featured work by artists like Rong Rong and Xing Danwen.
In 1994, Lee founded the OP Print Program. He was the first person to put forward the concept of collecting photographs in the art history of Hong Kong.
His love for art and photography serves as a driving force for him to continue his venture in Canada. In 2006 Lee relocated his Queen West gallery further west of the street, to 50 Gladstone Avenue. He founded INDEXG with his wife Holly Lee and daughter Iris. INDEXG, the three-storey building is an art project that houses a gallery, an art shop, a print-room and on the second floor, a unique five bedroom b&b with the mission concept of "Stay with Art". Since June 2006 INDEXG has organized more than 150 exhibitions.
In the fall of 2008, Lee relinquish the idea of running LEE Ka-sing gallery in a physical location, instead he chose to become an art dealer. He will continue to curate exhibitions for INDEXG and other institutions and focus on a group of fine and edgy artists from Canada, Asia and beyond.
Starting a fresh chapter, Lee Ka-sing will devote more time to pursue his creative writings. In addition, he is embarking on a large scale personal photo project - a turning point from his first ten years in Toronto during which he remained anonymous as an artist. |
